We’re officially more than halfway through the year. Six glorious months down, six more to go. And while I imagine your inboxes might be bursting with “Q2 Performance Review” requests and “Mid-Year Sales Projections” spreadsheets or Summer Reading Lists and calls to sign up for summer camps (me too, I am not immune), I’m here to talk about a different kind of mid-year check-in. The one for you.
Because let’s be real, while we’re all out here aiming to crush our professional goals, lead teams, build empires and generational wealth, raise incredible human beings, end poverty, and not become a meme, it’s alarmingly easy to let our personal lives resemble a dumpster fire. You know the drill: “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” “My diet consists of coffee and good intentions,” “Busy is my badge of honor.” Your therapist would probably agree with me that power napping and caffeine addiction are not forms of self-care.
So, let’s grab an herbal tea and have a little heart-to-heart. Are you on track to hit your personal goals? And no, “survive until Friday” doesn’t count as a long-term strategy. Are you aiming for that triathlon? Learning a new language? Finally getting around to organizing that chaotic closet that’s been silently judging you for years? Or have those aspirations been swallowed whole by the relentless demands of… well, everyone and everything else?
More importantly, how’s your balance? Or, dare I ask, do even remember what balance feels like? Are you so busy being busy that you’ve forgotten what it’s like to just be? Are you getting enough sleep to function like a human, or are you running on fumes from bed to daycare to the gym to the office to the restaurant and back to bed by the sheer force of your own ambition? And relaxation? What’s that, a new crypto trend? If your idea of unwinding involves scrolling through luxury homes on Instagram until you see double, we need to talk.
And let’s not shy away from the big ones: mental and physical health. Is your brain a buzzing hive of anxiety, or are you actually finding moments of peace? Is your body a well-oiled machine, or is it sending you subtle (or not-so-subtle) SOS signals? I’ve seen too many brilliant men and women burn out spectacularly because they treated their bodies and minds like expendable resources. Newsflash: they’re not.
So, what if you’ve just realized your personal life is less “thriving garden” and more “post-apocalyptic wasteland”? First, congratulations! Acknowledging the problem is 90% of the battle. The other 10% involves actually doing something about it, which, let’s be honest, is where most people get stuck.
The path forward isn’t always revolutionary. Sometimes it’s simply a tweak in habits. Maybe it’s setting firm boundaries around your work hours. Maybe it’s actually blocking out time in your calendar for exercise, just like you would for a critical board meeting. Perhaps it means finding different friends – not to say your current ones are bad, but if your social circle consists entirely of people who only talk about work and never encourage you to, say, go for a hike or take a pottery class, it might be time to diversify your portfolio of human connection.
It’s about intentionality. Just as you strategize for your business, you need to strategize for your life. And sometimes, that means making holding a mirror up to your life, making some tough calls if you don’t like what you see, cutting back on commitments that drain you, saying “no” to things that don’t align with your well-being, and prioritizing what truly matters. It’s not selfish; it’s sustainable. And frankly, a more balanced you is a more effective you. Your business, your family, and even your dog will thank you.
So, as you embark on this mid-year personal audit, here are a few things to ponder. Be honest with yourself, even if the truth stings a little:

The second half of the year is yours for the taking. Just don’t forget to take care of yourselves while you’re taking it!
