With most of our time being spent on the road this summer, it has been a whirlwind of family adventures paired with a giant dose of ensuing chaos. Don’t get me wrong – I love my family immensely. I also love making incredible memories with them while traveling. What I don’t love is sharing a bathroom with three other people, two of whom are teenaged boys. To be honest, all this togetherness in close quarters tested my patience to no end. It taught me a lot about myself, what I am willing to put up with, where my limits are, and what I must do in the future to better protect my sanity in similar environments.
Whether you’re navigating a family road trip or managing your team at work, here are some fun and practical tips to help protect your sanity while surrounded by chaos.
Tips To Protect Your Sanity Amid Chaos:
1. Power Hour: Your Personal Zen Time
Start your day earlier than anyone else to carve out some peaceful moments just for you. I cherish the mornings I rise before anyone else and get to savor my first cup of coffee without the threat of others’ questions, grievances, mood swings, and breakfast requests. I intentionally use my sacred coffee time to set a positive tone for my day ahead.
2. Set Expectations: Share The Plans
Be upfront with your family about what’s on the agenda for the trip before you leave. That way, they will know what to pack and can show up prepared with swimsuits, hiking boots, fancy clothes, or other specific items and fully participate in the planned activities. Also, help them temper their expectations by having a budget talk up front. If this is not a once-in-a-lifetime trip, perhaps they won’t be allowed to buy bags full of souvenirs or order steak at every meal. That’s okay but have an open conversation about it. Knowledge is power (and a tantrum preventer).
3. Pack Your Patience: Embrace the Journey
Despite prudent planning, travel can turn into a rollercoaster of surprises complete with twists, turns, and stomach-churning flips. Be prepared to adapt plans as needed to keep the trip enjoyable for everyone. Flexibility is your secret weapon for maintaining harmony so set the tone and embrace the new adventure. So, when the unexpected happens (and it will), just take a deep breath, effuse patience, and go with the flow. You’ll experience more satisfaction and joy when you don’t stress about what could have been.
4. Trust But Verify: The Backup Plan
It’s wonderful to rely on trusted plans and navigation apps, but always have a backup strategy in place. Think of it as your just-in-case safety net, ready to catch you if your main plan goes off the rails. After all, even the best-laid plans can sometimes lead to the most unforgettable memories and best stories.
5. Always Bring Snacks: The Ultimate Peacekeepers
If you have ever been on the receiving end of a hangry teenager’s monologue, you probably learned to never underestimate the power of a well-timed snack. A happy, well-fed crew is a much more harmonious one so keep a stash of your family’s favorite treats handy to avoid hunger-induced meltdowns and undue parental stress.
Happy Travels!
Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Set boundaries but embrace the unavoidable chaos, cherish the moments, and make the most of every adventure. Safe travels and happy memories! 🌟🚗🗺️
