There aren’t a lot of guarantees in life but one thing you can set your clock to is things changing. Your emotions, finances, relationships, kids, friends, circumstances, likes, and dislikes all change. Whether you like it or not, changes are going to occur throughout your life, and they won’t all be easy to deal with. Some people adjust well to change and even welcome it while others fight change tooth and nail, kicking and screaming every step of the way. I have a hard time coping every time my grocery store rearranges their shelves. Regardless of whether you are a ninja at dealing with change or avoid change at all costs, there are simple strategies you can use to navigate change more easily.
Simple Strategies For Dealing With Change:
- Stop fighting change! Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung taught us that, “What you resist persists.” Accept that change is part of life. Change can be uncertain, scary even, but it is also an awesome opportunity for growth and development. Instead of fighting change (I’m still working on this), try to embrace it and focus on the good that can come from it.
- Identify your feelings. Change can trigger all kinds of emotions, some comfortable, some not so much fun, and some downright earth-shattering. Acknowledging the change and naming the emotion/s it brings out in you will help you process and manage the change more effectively.
- Focus on what you can control. When you are dealing with change, it can often feel like everything is spinning out of your control. And some things are! Instead of worrying about all the things you can’t control, focus on the things you can control no matter how small they might seem in comparison.
- Lean on your people. You don’t need to white-knuckle change. It’s okay to ask for help. Reach out to trusted friends, family or a professional for support. Sometimes talking to others about what you’re going through can be extremely helpful and validate your feelings and concerns. Everyone goes through change. You aren’t alone.
- Embrace the opportunities change can bring. Change can be hard, but it also sows seeds that can reap new possibilities and open new doors. Focus on the positive aspects of change and nurture yourself through it. Shift your mindset from fear to growth so you can benefit the most from the change.
When you choose to embrace change instead of push back against it, you allow change to be a trigger for transformative growth in your life,
