If you have kids, kids who are back in school this month, I hope to goodness that means you find yourself with more time. More time for all the dishes, laundry, shopping, cooking, and cleaning that have been piling up and stressing you out so you can finally feel on top of things again or at least feel like you are no longer swimming against the current. More so though, I hope your kids being back in school means you have more time for you! But even if the kids being back in school means less time for you because of an increase in commute, activities, homework help, and assisting with all things PTA (is a monthly bake sale really necessary?), I hope you are able to carve out more time in your loaded schedule for your passions so you can recharge and better weather the storm that raising kids while also running a business can be.
When you decided to grow your family, surely you knew your budget would change, you’d go on less vacations, and your time would be more divided. Did you foresee yourself putting your passions on the backburner entirely, though, once little Gracie May made her debut? Did you consider for a second that you’d no longer have the time or energy to read, run, write, dance, paint, play basketball, kayak, or watch sports? You know, those activities of your youth that lit you up or fed your soul? When commitments stretch us thin and we must prioritize what activities get our time and energy, family and business reign supreme while pursuing our passions are the first to get squeezed out. When that happens, either intentionally or not, you lose a bit of yourself. And when you leave your passions on the backburner for too long, they will fizzle out along with your zest for life. That’s not allowed in my book!
Make this season the season you reignite your passions regardless of your busyness factor. How? Start by bundling your passions with the must-do activities in your life. Love music? Listen while you’re driving or grocery shopping. Love reading? Instead of scrolling Instagram, read a book when your brain needs a break from your important projects. Love dancing? Your kids might have a blast jamming out with you in the kitchen while you cook. Love sports? Subscribe to a sports podcast and listen on the go. You can also play catch with your kids or take them to a ball game when you’re on childcare duty. When you pair your passions with other activities, it can make those activities more joy-filled and meaningful, and in many cases less painful. Infusing your passions back into your life in this way could also help you identify which passions excite you the most. It’s those passions that you should then work to gain a stronger foothold for in your schedule.
Rediscover your passions and you’ll no doubt reinvigorate our zest for life!
