Spoiler alert: it’s almost halftime 2022! As every good coach knows, halftime presents an opportunity to regroup, change strategies, and get motivated to go for the win. While the official middle of the year isn’t until July 2nd, I like to spend time in May reflecting on the first half of the year, reviewing what worked, what far exceeded my expectations, what didn’t work, what failed miserably, what I was thinking, and how I had to pivot. After going through that exercise and journaling endlessly, I get to work mapping out what I want the second half to look like and strategizing how I’m going to achieve my vision, just like any good coach at halftime.
Second Half Game Plan
Step 1: Envision The Next 6 Months
Once I get started, I do a great deal of soul searching and focus in on what I want the next six months to look and feel like. Note: I do not make a list of goals I want to accomplish during the next six months in this step. Instead, for each month I answer questions like:
- What birthdays, holidays, and special occasions are important to me?
- Who do I want to spend my time with?
- What activities do I want to include in my schedule?
- What activities do I not want to include?
- What vacations do I want to go on?
- What house projects do I want to tackle?
- What business projects do I want to focus on?
Step 2: Take My Resources Into Consideration
Just as my eyes can be bigger than my stomach, what I want to accomplish can exceed my bandwidth. So, once I have a clear vision of what I WANT my next my six months to look and feel like, I have the difficult conversation with myself about resources (yes, I talk to myself sometimes. Don’t act like I’m the only one). I consider my time, energy, health, finances, and other family members’ commitments for which I am the taxi driver and fan club. Doing so gives me a more realistic picture of what the next six months could feasibly look like based on the resources available and helps me determine which of my wants I must trash or put on hold.
Step 3: Determine My Goals And Action Steps
Once I have a clear vision of what my next six months could actually look like, I get to work figuring out how to make my dream reality. This step includes a lot of goal setting and breaking down goals into the action steps I must take to achieve those goals. Take Yoga Classes might only involve the action steps of researching studios, registering, and buying a yoga mat but Redesigning My Website might take 100 action steps over the course of a few months. Once I identify the necessary action steps to achieve everything I want to accomplish in the second half of the year, I start setting deadlines and scheduling tasks and activities on my calendar.
Step 4: Commit to GETTING SHIT DONE!!!
This is possibly the most important step because no matter how great my plan… no matter how strong my strategies… no matter how powerful my motivation…. if I don’t stay committed to getting shit done, I won’t. In this step, I revisit my plan weekly and embrace flexibility because life seems to love throwing curve balls and pivoting is often necessary. No matter what, I stay committed to getting back on track and living out the exciting, memorable, fulfilling life I mapped out during halftime.
