I may be late to the party but I recently started listening to podcasts. During the episode Never Struggle with Copy Again on The Influencer Podcast with Julie Solomon, her guest Laura Belgray made a comment that spoke to my soul,
If you were told you weren’t a good writer by an English professor, you may well be an even better writer than most people.
It reminded me how I had always loved to write until my papers came back covered in red ink throughout high school and college. Each marked-up paper did a fantastic job of steadily crushing my spirit and passion for writing until it was completely gone. I spent a couple of decades not writing because I was told I wasn’t good at it. It took Laura Belgray’s comment to inspire me to not worry about what other people think of my writing. Not stress about how many grammatical errors I’m likely making. Not care what Professor Eischauer would say about my lack of transitional phrases. And JUST WRITE. So that’s what I’m doing and I’m loving every minute of getting my thoughts out of my head and down on paper.
We all have passions and hobbies that brought us joy in the past but for one reason or another, we no longer take time to pursue them. Let’s be honest… When you’re raising kids, running a busy household, and working, there isn’t a lot of time left for hobbies. So, what are some things you used to love doing that you don’t do anymore? Reading a trashy novel? Writing? Exploring the world? Crocheting? Playing an instrument? Cross-words? Gardening? Dancing? Whatever it is, I encourage you make the time to bring it back into your life, even if for only 15 minutes a day. We could all use a little more joy and me time in our lives, right?
